Why use UniProt database

UniProt is a collaboration between three institutes, EBI, SIB and PIR. These institutes have together created a large public central database with functional information on proteins. Each protein in the database contains amino acid sequence, protein name, description, taxonomic data, citation information, widely accepted biological ontologies, classifications and cross-references.

This protein database is called Uniprot Knowledgebase (UniProtKB) and consists of two sections UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot and UniProtKB/TrEMBL.

  • UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot contains reviewed, manually annotated records with information extracted from literature and curator-evaluated computational analysis.
  • UniProtKB/TrEMBL contains computationally analyzed records ready for review and manual annotation.
